Synopsis
Two Furnaces for Udarnik Josip Trojko follows the disassembling of the famous Siemens-Martin furnace, which once stood in the heart of the huge Yugoslavian iron industry. The sons of former steel workers slowly take apart the old furnace, and then construct a new, larger, more modern furnace into which the pieces of the old furnace are fed. As we watch the old making way for the new, we hear off-camera archive recordings of political speeches from the period when the old furnace was in operation, full of enthusiasm and ideological optimism. We also hear a voice from the past reading Tito’s telegrams to the former forge workers, congratulating them on their tireless efforts in meeting the production targets. The flow of the speeches follows the rhythm of the construction of the new furnace to demonstrate that life, like steel, always continues to flow.
